Teach Yourself French

You can absolutely teach yourself French. Most people who believe they can't teach themselves French, believe so because of several common myths:

1. "It's impossible to learn a langauge fast." - MYTH!

This is not true. You can learn a language fast. You will not master a language in weeks or a few months, but you can become fluent. What that means is that you can communicate with relative ease and understanding in most situations that you will find yourself in. The key to achieving the ability to communicate is to achieve conversational and situational understanding. Your immediate goal in teaching yourself French is to become unafraid of opening your mouth and speaking. With this as your first goal - the exact grammar and other rules come later.

2. "It's much easier to learn a language as a child." - MYTH!

News studeues have demonstrated the exact opposite. Under a controlled environment, the exposure time to a new language is shorter for an adult than a child and adults learn faster than children.

3. "The best way to learn a language is to go to that foriegn county and immerse, immerse, immerse..." - MYTH

Though it seems that by immersing yourself in the environment where everyone is speaking French, and that would be one of the most effective ways to learn, the truth is that you can simulate the French environment with the proper tools and instruction. You can teach yourself French from your home and take those skills with you to France. The reason this can be done is because in the digital age, as long as you have a computer, many situations can be simulate and you can practice handling and dealing with them as if they were real life. These tools didn't exist just 5 to 10 years ago.

Don't fall for these myths, you can teach yourself French, these are the steps:

A. Start with English. That's right. Get a very basic basic grammar book and review the basics. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, direct and indirect objects, pronuouns and prepositions. That's all! Understand those and you're ready for the next step.

B. You start to get comfortable with listening and speaking the language outloud. For the first part, find a resource that allows only audio so that you don't get hung up on the writing. Listen and repeat. Do this in a distraction free space. Ideally, you will find a multimedia solution that mixes audio, video and other multimedia to help teach yourself French. (We recommend Rocket Languages course - more on this below.) The second part, involves renting or buying French langauges so that you get the pace and pronunciation.
